Georgia
Founding
Georgia was the last to become a colony out of the thirteen colonies. The founder of Georgia, James Oglethorpe, was a member of the English Parliament, who's attention was drawn to the poor conditions of the English debtor's prisons. He made a plan to transport the unfortunate debtors to America. In 1732, a charter was given for 21 years to Oglethorpe and his board of trustees for the land between the Savannah and Altamaha rivers and westward to the "South Sea". The new colony was named Georgia, and was a haven for debtors. He would pay for the debtors to move to Georgia. If he had to pay for them to get to Georgia then they would get 50 acres of land. If they could pay their own way to America then they could have as much as 500 acres of land.
Government
Some people, trustees, had set laws for Georgia and the people were obligated to follow them. That would be a reason that they couldn't do anything about the fact that slavery was illegal. The people living in this colony did not like the way they were ruled. They had no say in anything so some people packed their bags and went to neighboring colonies such as South Carolina. The trustees were supported by the King and when he saw how Georgia was failing he stopped supporting them. The trustees were left with no choice than to do what the settlers wanted. With Oglethorpe as governor, Georgia was a proprietary colony, a colony granted by the British king to a person or group of people with full governing rights, for 19 years. James Oglethorpe did not like that the settlers were changing everything about his colony so he left and never came back. Shortly after the trustees left and in the year of 1951 Georgia became a royal colony.
Geography
The colony Georgia was bordered by North Carolina in the north. To the east of Georgia is South Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean. The northern part of the colony is in the Appalachian Mountains. Most of the soil in Georgia is ideal for planting crops, such as indigo and rice.
Economy
It took a while for Georgia to get off the ground. At first the settlers weren't happy. They saw how well South Carolina was doing and they wanted slaves but that was prohibited. In 1749, slavery was permitted because the settlers put pressure on the trustees. This helped the economy to boom. Then, people actually wanted to come to Georgia. The economy of Georgia flourished because of the many plantations that grew mostly indigo, rice, and tobacco. Georgia traded and exported all that crops that they grew. The careers that were most popular in Georgia were blacksmith, silversmith, tailor, pottery maker, and farmer.
Religion
Georgia was made to help people that were in debt and had nothing to do with religion. Because of that people had freedom of religion. There were rules that everyone had to go to church on Sundays and everyone had to honor the Sabbath but not all did this. It really didn't matter though because the religion laws were not well enforced.
