Founding
Roger Williams was another man who believed that the Puritans had too much power in Massachusetts. In 1636, Roger Williams, after being banished from the Massachusetts colony due to his religious views, settled on land granted to him by the Narragansett tribe. He called this land "Providence" and declared it a place of religious freedom. In 1638, Anne Hutchinson brought more settlers who were attracted to the colony because of the promise of religious freedom to establish Pocasset, now Portsmouth. William Coddington founded Newport in 1639. Providence, Portsmouth, and Newport became Rhode Island.
Government
All white men had the right to vote here just like they did in Connecticut. New England colonies such as Massachusetts had town meetings. They discussed different things during these meetings. For example they could have been discussing how much to pay people in the colony. These meeting are what spread democratic ideas. Like Massachusetts Rhode Island was a royal colony, a colony in which the King of England granted a charter to the colonial government establishing the rules under which the colony was to be governed.
Geography
In the west, Connecticut bordered Rhode Island. To the east and north was Massachusetts. The Atlantic Ocean was on the east and south border of this colony. Eastern Rhode Island contained the lowlands of the Narragansett Bay, and Western Rhode Island formed part of the New England Upland. The soil in these colonies wasn't very good for farming. It was very poor soil. Luckily for these colonies the forests had a lot to offer. The cut down the trees and became a shipbuilding center.
Economy
Colonial Rhode Island's economy was highly based off of fishing, farming, trading, and shipbuilding because of its close proximity to the ocean. In 1652, African American slaves were in Rhode Island.
Religion
Roger Williams founded Rhode Island because he wanted there to be religious freedom and so there was religious tolerance in Rhode Island. There was also no state church and you weren't even required to go to church.
