Maryland
Founding
Sir George Calvert, also known as Lord Baltimore, was a well liked man. Then his son married the daughter of the Earl of Arundel. The family was Roman Catholic and Calvert was influenced by them. When he became a Roman Catholic even King James resented him. He wanted Roman Catholics to have a safe haven from all the hate that he experienced. He got a grant and went to the New World. He found a territory on both sides of Chesapeake Bay that was only inhabited by Natives. He named the colony Maryland. Unfortunately, he died on April, 1632. However, the charter was granted to his son, Cecilius Calvert, on June, 1632. The settlers that came to Maryland made sure to stay from the swampy areas.

Government
Maryland was a proprietary colony, a colony that was granted to an individual and group by the English crown and were granted full rights of self-government. People wanted to change somethings about the colony but Lord Baltimore believed that since he was granted the charter then he was the only one who had the right to rule the colony. Eventually the people convinced him to let them write their own laws. Maryland had to governors. Calvert who had a charter and Lord Baltimore and a man named Claiborne ruling together. Eventually, there was peace in the colony.
Geography
In the north, Maryland was bordered by Pennsylvania. To the west of this colony was Virginia and the Atlantic Ocean. Maryland faced the Atlantic Ocean again in the south. In the east, Maryland was bordered by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and the Atlantic Ocean. The west part of this colony was in the Appalachian Mountains range. Maryland bordered the Chesapeake Bay, and the land along the shores was used for growing crops.
Economy
Colonial Maryland's economy was based on one cash crop: tobacco. At first they used indentured servants to do their work but these servants died too quickly, and usually before their payment was up. Then they turned to slaves and instead used them. That turned out to be an easier method for them.
Religion
Because Calvert created this colony because he was being persecuted because of his religion Maryland first welcomed Catholics and Protestant. Eventually though the colony passed the Act of Toleration which allowed all types of Christians to have religious freedom. That is all Christians but Jews. The Act of Toleration also made the punishment on people that didn't believe in God harsh. They could be put to death for their belief.
