The New England Colonies
The New England colonies included Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. In all the New England colonies, families were very close. There was originally two types of ruling in these colonies. Propriety Colonies were colonies that were given to people by the King. They got the land but they had to pay the King yearly. The other type of colony was Royal Colonies. These colonies were in the New World but were still controlled by the King. Town meetings were the colonies' form of government, which were when most or all the members of a community came together to discuss policies, budgets, etc. of a local government. These town meetings encouraged the growth of democratic ideas in the New England colonies. New England had rocky soil that was poor for farming, so they relied heavily on whaling and fishing. Most of the soil in these colonies was rocky and didn't produce many crops so they usually hunted different types of birds and deer. They also fished and killed whales. All these colonies were pretty big on education because they wanted their kids to be able to read the Bible. Another thing was that the people here were very hard working because of the main religion in this area. They believed that God wanted them to work hard and not be slackers.
