The Middle Colonies
The middle colonies included Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Because of their location, the middle colonies served as important distribution centers. Unlike the New England colonies, the middle colonies were fertile. Crops from local farms would feed these colonies. They grew and imported tons of grain. Because of this, they became known as the Bread-Basket Colonies. The lumber and shipbuilding industries also enjoyed success in the middle colonies. The middle colonies presented a variety of religions, such as Quakers, Mennonites, Lutherans, Dutch Calvinists, and Presbyterians. Unlike the New England Colonies, each of the Middle colonies were different. These colonies didn't not allow all the same religions or have the same style of government.
