The Southern Colonies
The southern colonies included Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. These colonies made large profits from cash crops, such as tobacco, indigo dye, and rice. Because of the huge success from these crops, the southern colonies needed more labor, so they had a high slave population. The southern colonies' dense farms provided some of the best shipbuilding materials in the world. The southern colonies were split into two areas - the tidewater plantations and back country. The tidewater plantations were very profitable from cash crops. Their farms were run by 20 - 100 slaves. The back country lifestyle was very different. They were very poor, had very few slaves, and had small farms.
