New Jersey
Founding
Before any people had explored the New World, the Lenni-Lanpe lived in the New World. Eventually they were forced out. In the year 1609, Henry Hudson claimed land for the Dutch. This land includes what is now known as New Jersey. The Dutch West India Company originally wanted farmers to settle in the area. Unfortunately, not many people were settling so as a bribe they told people that they could become fur traders. This bribe worked and more people started to move to the New Netherlands (This is what New Jersey is called at this time). By the time the Dutch actually started to settle they already had competition. The Swedish had also set up colonies and called it New Sweden. Eventually New Sweden was taken under Dutch rule. Then New Netherlands was taken from the Dutch by the English. They took New Netherlands without even putting up a fight. After the Duke of York takes over New Netherlands he decides that New York (that's what he renamed the colony) was too big and gave some of the land away to a friend. The friend renamed his land New Jersey and made it a proprietary colony.

A main product here was grain. They made about twice as much as they did in other places. They made quite a lot of profit and became known as one of the bread-basket colonies. They also had slaves brought in from Africa to do their work. Slaves eventually made up about 10 percent of the population and did about 40 percent of the work. They also had indentured servants in this area. These types of servant worked to pay off debt.
Religion
The English created a document called the Concessions and Agreements. This gave everyone the right to have their own religion beliefs and nobody could be denied that right. New Jersey was divided by religion at a time. It was West New Jersey, and East New Jersey. Quakers went to West New Jersey. Eventually though the New Jerseys were brought together by English rule.
